Breaking News – Explosion at Crewe Railway Station

September 28, 2011

A man and a woman have been injured in a series of explosions at Crewe railway station.

Manhole covers were blown off in the blasts, on Nantwich Road. The two injured people have been taken to hospital suffering from burns.

A faulty underground electrical cable is believed to have caused the explosions

Cheshire Police say trains have been suspended and surrounding roads cordoned off, but insist the situation is under control.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “There has been a power failure in the area which has resulted in the British Transport Police and Network Rail closing the railway station.

“The electrical authority are carrying out an investigation.”

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “There was an explosion in the roadway near the train station.

“The cause is not yet established but it is believed it may have been a combination of gas and electric underground cables.

“Emergency services are there making it safe.”

Update 23:00 – Trains are now passing through the station but Train Operating Companies are asking passengers to find alternative methods of reaching Crewe.

Update 23:30 – The cause has been confirmed as a faulty underground electrical cable.  Around 3,000 properties in the area around Crewe station lost power at around 8pm. Power was restored to all but around 10 of the properties by 10pm.  The two injured people were taken to hospital suffering from arm and facial burns.

Update 0:00 – Trains are now stopping at Crewe but services are experiencing delays of up to 45 minutes.  The delays are expected to last until 01:00
